about

Did I mention busy weeks? It turns out Pinscape rehearsals coupled with film race competitions, plus a first release for my new music project Sevy-Verna… holy moly, man. Living the musical dream!

The focal point for this tune is a harmonic progression that I initially worked out on the piano: a subtly modulating passage that weaves through keys yet ends up back in Bb minor. It honestly sounded nicer in piano form, but sometimes you sequence things with another sound source and it simply refuses to click; a lesson I really ought to learn one of these days. But no matter, as deadlines loom near…

So, we whip up a quick drum pattern and pass it through a frequency shifter for some movement, while automating the volume of the synth and piano channels to build momentum. But for the second half it's time to switch things up with an ethereal arpeggiating melody and time-stretched drums. The Cubase/élastique engine has its way with the drum loop at the 200% ratio and - never one to draw the line - I decide it still calls for some additional glitchy elements in the form of the Fragment effect plug-in. Nice!

This music fits neatly under the guise of Exit Signs, conjuring up stark images of endless highways, desolate white-walled hallways or the neon glow of a forlorn dive bar after last call. ... more
