about

New software, nice melodies, no time! The calendar is filled to the brim this week, but a short session or two were set aside for yet another weekly song. Let's get started!

We begin with a gentle piano passage, courtesy of the unexpected Alchemy granular synth/sampler (which adds a nice subtle bowed guitar-esque element to the equation). This melody and chord progression originated on my SV-1 digital piano, and honestly sounded a bit better in its original form before hastily recording it as MIDI into the sequencer. But sometimes that's the way things go, ya know?

But what about the beats? Never fear, as we quickly get to those in the form of a few Maschine patterns exported to audio tracks, manually sliced and rearranged on the grid, and routed to a drum bus for effects processing. Cue that new software I mentioned: a nice freebie called Hysteresis from Glitchmachines, stuttering audio through its delay and filter engines in ways that I cannot yet entirely wrap my head around. This combined with the SaltyGrain and Replicant effects makes for some truly alien percussion, lurching and morphing along its path.

But as I mentioned, this week is a busy one; time to wrap up and begin work on a score for a 48-hour film race starting in 3, 2, 1…

This music fits neatly under the guise of Exit Signs, conjuring up stark images of endless highways, desolate white-walled hallways or the neon glow of a forlorn dive bar after last call. ... more
