about

I made it back in one piece after a very successful road trip, and must say I'm pleasantly surprised with the track I was able to piece together while covering nearly 800 miles of terrain. But back to daily life we go, and this week presents its own set of new challenges… namely a Pinscape show for the opening night of Portland's 2nd annual film festival.

So let's dive right into this one with a chorus-first approach. I often start out a track with a slow build before anything really kicks in, but not today. Let's try chorus, verse, chorus, coda… cool? Cue the syncopated synths, drums, and all the reverb. And perhaps that maritime lifestyle got to me last week along the coast, as I'm still feeling it with the seagull-esque arpeggiated synth lines echoing out from the Kairatune instrument.

But let's ease up a bit and bring it back down to the verse, with a minimal blend of synths and drums. The highlight for me here is the subtly-pulsating tone courtesy of Phosphor's 'Rhythm Cruiser' preset. So cool. In come some stuttery drums from BreakTweaker and a lead melody from Phonec, and before you know it we're back to another chorus emphasized by more hi-hats and bigger swells of synthesizer.

But don't forget that coda; a controlled crescendo of new harmonies and cool interplay between the bass and glitchy drum fills. And right as we hit that 4.5 minute mark, I must wrap this one up and head out to some movie screenings to support the talented film makers who have landed upon our city this week!

This music fits neatly under the guise of Exit Signs, conjuring up stark images of endless highways, desolate white-walled hallways or the neon glow of a forlorn dive bar after last call. ... more
